Herkimer County, New York, is renowned for producing a distinctive variety of quartz, often referred to as “Herkimer diamonds,” prized for their natural double terminations and exceptional clarity. This specimen is composed of a cluster of doubly terminated crystals, each exhibiting the characteristic 18-faced form, with sharply defined faces and edges that give Herkimer material its precise and memorable shape. Notably, the vast majority of Herkimer diamond crystals recovered are single crystals that are totally detached from their matrices, making this example an especially sculptural one.
The crystals exhibit strong clarity and reveal tiny internal hydrocarbon inclusions, which add depth and visual interest without overwhelming the composition. Altogether, this is a refined and well-balanced example with both the structure and internal character that define the best Herkimer specimens.
