Calcite

Wenshan Mine, Wenshan County, Yunnan Province, China

Calcite is among the most diverse mineral species, forming in a wide range of crystal habits and colors, a key factor in its enduring popularity among collectors. The Wenshan Mine is particularly well known for producing striking specimens, including stalactites, clusters, and dramatic crystal “bursts.” Among the most sought-after are those that resemble natural forms, such as flowers or trees, creating miniature landscapes.

This specimen is a compelling example, featuring explosive clusters of radiating scalenohedral calcite crystals perched on slender stems. The formation suggests growth in a fluid environment, likely upside down from its current orientation, allowing the “treetops” more time to develop. While many examples from the locality are colorless, this piece displays a warm golden hue that adds depth and contrast to the composition. With its varied textures and natural, bonsai-like appearance, it stands as a characteristic and visually engaging example from Wenshan.
