Garnet var. Tsavorite

Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mountains, Arusha Region, Tanzania

The Merelani Hills are best known for tanzanite but also produce notable tsavorite, first discovered in the region in the 1960s. Crystals from this locality are especially valued when they exhibit defined geometry and strong color. Tsavorite, the vivid green variety of grossular garnet, is prized for its saturated color and brilliance; however, most material is recovered as gem rough, with well-formed crystals far less commonly encountered. This example exhibits strong morphology, with broad, sleek faces and sharp edges. Its translucency reveals a lively internal landscape which, paired with its rich green color, makes it unmistakably tsavorite.

Modest in scale but attractive in form, this specimen represents a classic example from Merelani, with a pleasing balance of color, structure, and natural character.
