Gold – The Bristlecone

Colorado Quartz Mine, Mariposa County, California, USA

Well-crystallized gold is known from only a handful of localities worldwide, including Nevada, Russia, and Brazil, but no source rivals California. California gold is renowned not only for its abundance but for producing larger, more complex crystal structures with superior definition and a bold yellow color indicative of high gold content. Among these localities, the Colorado Quartz Mine stands as the most important, having produced several of the world’s most famous crystallized gold specimens, including The Bristlecone.

The Bristlecone is remarkable for both its substantial gold content and its extraordinary crystallography. Elongated octahedral and twinned crystals radiate from a central spine, each sharply terminated and brilliantly lustrous. The aggregate forms a sculptural, arborescent shape reminiscent of California’s ancient bristlecone pines, resting on a contrasting matrix of chalky white quartz. Pristine and unrepaired, The Bristlecone exemplifies gold crystallized at its finest—robust, intricate, and undeniably one of the greatest crystallized gold specimens ever discovered.
