Diopside & Graphite

Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mountains, Arusha Region, Tanzania

Diopside is a member of the pyroxene group, which can form in prismatic crystals. While it is often encountered in granular or massive habits, well-formed, transparent crystals of notable color are far less common, particularly in multi-crystal compositions on matrix.

This spectacular specimen presents a dynamic cluster of sharply terminated diopside crystals in an elegant, naturally staggered formation. The tallest crystals are accented by smaller, well-positioned secondaries that frame and enhance the composition, allowing each crystal to be appreciated without interruption. The color is a richly saturated, vivid Kelly green of remarkable intensity, further amplified by the contrasting graphite matrix. Lustrous and translucent, the crystals are like sparkling gems against their gunmetal pedestal. The finest diopside crystals possess an electric, luminous presence, and this is no exception, and all in a rare and balanced composition unlike any other.
