Diopside

Samax Mine, Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mts, Arusha Region, Tanzania

Diopside is a pyroxene mineral. Although it may be found in granular or massive forms, it is most commonly known for exhibiting a prismatic shape. In fact, its name stems from the Greek words for “double” or “twice” and “appearance,” which is an allusion to the two possible orientations of its prism zone.

This is an attractive example with a striking, kelly green hue. Translucent and vivid, the crystal glows with just a hint of light. Glossy luster highlights the smooth faces and sharp terminations of its elongated crystal form. Gemlike and bright, this would make a lovely representative piece in any collection.
