Celestite

Sakoany Mine, Mitsinjo Department, Boeny Region, Mahajanga Province, Madagascar

Native strontium sulfate, or “celestite,” (sometimes also called, “celestine”) can be found all over the world. Although it may form in an array of colors, from white to pink, pale green, reddish, and even black, its name is derived from the Latin word for “sky” for its heavenly, light blue variation. While there are many notable locations for celestite, examples from the Sakoany Mine in
Madagascar are among some of the best for its incredible quality. At their finest, the crystals have glossy luster, excellent crystal morphology, and attractive color.

This is a lovely example with the characteristic color and great quality for which Sakoany is known. The primary crystals are defined, euhedral, and elongated against a matrix of smaller celestite crystals. They have sharp terminations, sleek luster, and vitreous transparency. With its ethereal aesthetics, it’s no wonder celestite is a favorite among novices and collectors alike.
