Celestite, a strontium sulfate mineral, is known for its range of colors, though it is most closely associated with its “celestial,” sky-blue hue, from which its name is derived. While the species occurs worldwide, material from the Sakoany Mine in Madagascar is widely regarded among the finest, producing crystals with exceptional luster, clarity, and well-defined morphology.
This specimen features a prominent, elongated focal crystal on a matrix of smaller celestite crystals. The primary crystal is sharply defined and well-terminated, with broad, window-like faces and excellent transparency. Paired with their ethereal color and shining luster, it’s no wonder that celestite was named after “the heavens.” Balanced and attractive, this is a lovely example from the Sakoany Mine.
