Calcite & Apophyllite

Jalgaon District, Maharashtra, India

This extraordinary calcite with apophyllite from the Jalgaon District stands as a clear outlier among Indian material, far exceeding the standard typically associated with the locality. While Jalgaon has produced many attractive calcites, only rarely have specimens emerged with the scale, refinement, and visual authority of this example. Widely regarded as a benchmark for the locality and among the finest calcites from India, the specimen immediately commands attention through its remarkable combination of architectural complexity, luminosity, and precision.

At its center is a beautifully developed calcite twin of exceptional geometric definition, exhibiting razor-sharp edges, glassy luster, and striking transparency. A subtle zone of lemon-yellow coloration imparts warmth and depth to the crystal, which becomes especially vivid under light, giving the specimen an almost unmatched radiance. Surrounding apophyllite crystals provide both compositional balance and a refined textural contrast, enhancing the sculptural quality of the piece without overwhelming the dominant calcite. Fully complete on all sides and free from damage or restoration, the specimen possesses a rare sense of harmony despite its complexity. Pieces of this caliber have largely disappeared into important private collections, and this example ranks not only among the finest calcites from India, but among the most important calcite specimens known worldwide.
