Calcite

Daye County, Huangshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, China

Calcite is one of the most prolific minerals on Earth, yet its remarkable diversity ensures that no two specimens are ever quite the same. Its wide range of crystal habits, colors, and associations allows collectors to build entire suites of calcite, each piece distinctly different from the next.

This is a striking example featuring a prominent, sharply formed crystal in a modified rhombohedral habit. Broad, sculptural, and perfectly terminated, the crystal displays subtle surface striations and a sleek, glassy luster that accentuates its natural geometry. Translucent and vitreous, its color shifts from near-colorless to a golden-orange hue thanks to trace amounts of iron.
