Calcite

Daguangsha Iron Mine, Daye County, Huangshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, China

Calcite is celebrated for the diversity of its crystal forms and vibrant coloration. Here’s one such example that features a dramatic cluster of sharp, scalenohedral crystals in a richly saturated golden-yellow hue (imparted by iron). The striking color, combined with the precision of its crystal forms, makes it visually striking from every angle.

What truly sets this piece apart, however, is its later generation of colorless, rhombohedral calcite crystals that have grown on the golden “spear-points.” They resemble splashing raindrops, adding geological complexity and imparting the piece with a sense of movement. With its bold color, sharp geometry, and multi-generational growth, the specimen stands out for its impressive morphology and artistic qualities.
