Pyromorphite

Daoping Mine, Gongcheng Co., Guilin Pref., Guangxi Zhuang Region, China

Pyromorphite is a lead-based mineral that derives its name from the Greek words “pyr” (fire) and “morphe” (form). It is a member of the apatite family that forms in heavily oxidized veins of lead ore. It’s renowned for its vibrant shades of green, orange, and yellow, as well as its propensity for captivating luster and attractive crystal formations, all of which make it a favorite among collectors.

Chinese pyromorphite, in particular, has garnered widespread acclaim, with specimens from the Daoping mine representing the pinnacle of modern classics for their large individual crystal sizes, vibrant tone, and dispersion of color. This example, featuring a cluster of crystals with exemplary luster and color saturation, epitomizes the sought-after qualities of the locality. It boasts a vivid, “Granny Smith” green hue, and sharply articulated, barrel-shaped crystals. The impressive morphology of every crystal is accentuated by its sleek luster, highlighting every ridge and edge. Resembling a seabed covered in glowing deep-sea lifeforms, the specimen has a striking, interpretive appeal in addition to its fantastic crystal quality. From its historical significance to its aesthetic beauty, this is a great example of why pyromorphite is considered a cult classic among mineral collectors worldwide.
