This impressive calcite from the Cumberland Mine in Smith County, Tennessee, commands attention through both its scale and dramatic crystal morphology. It is composed of a commanding primary crystal. Notably, its termination is a landscape of tiny peaks, an indication of environmental change during its formation. The result is a sculptural shape that evokes the movement and intensity of a flame. Furthering that likeness is its richly saturated orange coloration, further enlivened by a glassy, reflective luster that catches the light across the crystal’s many faces. The calcite is contrasted by a tan matrix that punctuates its gemlike qualities. Measuring over 34 centimeters across and weighing more than 16 kilograms, the specimen stands out not only for its striking morphology but also for the unusual size of the primary crystal, placing it among the more imposing examples of calcite from this classic Tennessee locality.
